Though I never thought about it quite that in-depth, I'd say MMO addiction is probably the biggest reason I never touched the genre anyhow. I don't regret never playing Final Fantasy XI or WoW.

Interesting article. But this:
So picture the rat in his box. Or, since I'm one of these gamers and don't like to think of myself as a rat, picture an adorable hamster. Maybe he can talk, and is voiced by Chris Rock.

is definitely a guinea pig. Doesn't anyone fact check these articles? ;)

I don't like rpgs generally anyway. I'm glad I don't have the personality that would enjoy these games.

It's pretty easy for me to break an MMO addiction because I just (and actually have in the past, twice to be exact) join a forum about the MMO (actually, I already had accounts on the two that I did this) and post a topic saying that I'm leaving. It took a lot of forcing myself but I was able to give all my stuff away.

Not that I'm picking on your semantics or anything.. but if it's easy to break any "addiction" then it's probably not an addiction.

Yeah, I don't have any interest in MMORPG's, and now that just decreased to below 0.

I prefer games where you can pick up and play mostly, except RPG's are one of my favorites, only the ones I can get into.

Also Im pissed off FF has become one of those. >=(

Yeah, I've talked about this general topic a lot. I do work in behavioral psychology, so this stuff is pretty transparent to me and disturbing.

Here's a post I made here on racketboy a few months ago:

Here's my response to this Cracked article when it came up recently on Kotaku:

For more disturbing news about game design elements, I also recommend this article about how they shame you into playing more:

This is why I was never interested in them to begin with.

You know what pissed me off? My brother went through a phase where he was infatuated with Runescape. I couldn't understand it. He'd talk for hours on the phone with a friend his age who played the game. He spent hours grinding, finding items, and leveling up his character.

There's two reasons I'll play a game:

1. It's "easy to learn hard to master" and has some high score/competitive element. Like NiGHTS into Dreams, almost every Atari arcade ever, Tetris, Street Fighter.

2. It has high production values, is kinda movie like, and takes me away from the real world for 10 hours or so.

This MMO my brother played was neither. It equated to pressing a button over and over again to make numbers go up. Then you get to strut around in a virtual world while other people stare at your numbers and say, "Wow, your numbers are high."

I'll admit i can get hooked on mmorpgs however i tend to play a lot for a few day close to a week but after that i have played so much that i have lost all interest in the game and i rarely return. But i do get the urge from time to time to download any of the mmorpgs i have played just to revisit my characters.

Lately however i have been actively ignoring mmorpgs and my urge to waste time in them because compared to single player rpg's mmorpg's lack any real sense of accomplishment. In other words you could spend 40+ hours finishing Skies of Arcadia or just be a mid level character on some server.
