As the topic suggests i am wondering if anyone else is feeling the same about current generation games and that they never seem to live up to there hype.
For the record the last decent game i played was The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princes on the GameCube(cause the Wii was to much at the time) but that being said i've not owned a 360 or ps3 and only played what friends have had running at the time. As for PC games this is where what i'm trying to say really makes sense. Think of games like Touhou, Recoil or UT2004 and even HL1/2... all of these games were amazing and had features never before seen in games. But now it seems every game i pickup i don't actually feel like i'm playing...
For an example i got a copy of Mass Effect 2 because it was apparently the greatest game of the year and so on. After getting about half(or less) way through i just lost interest because of the excessive dialog and lack of control over the player. Obviously i pretty much grew up in arcades and like action intense shmups and what have you, but i knew what to expect from this game and what i got was just not enough. Basically about the controls is when i first got my Game Boy it came with Tetris and Super Mario Land sticky taped to the side by my dad. When you pressed A, Mario would jump without any hesitation whether there was fire ball or not above but when i am playing these new games i am often finding myself waiting for each animation to play or merely influencing another.
Where is the control in all of that? are you really playing or are you just watching.
At the moment i am waiting for a sequel to Shantae(for gbc) to come out on DSi ware... yet i can almost tell there will be something wrong with it. Something beyond how much "better" it looks and how many new abilities have been added.
Maybe its just me staying awake till 2:30am or not but i am really starting to wonder whats happening to our games and why "enjoyable" titles are so few and far between now.
Why don't new games turn me on?

A lot of new games don't interest me but I had had a leftover gift card from my birthday that I needed to spend at BestBuy. I ended up getting Bionic Commando because there wasn't really anything left on the shelf but when I got home I got a special suprise. The game is (at least for me) absolutely awesome.

It sounds like you're just playing the wrong kind of game for the type of experience you want. Mass Effect 2 is a Bioware game. They have kind of a reputation for being very text driven with less focus on 1-to-1 player controlled action. That's their schtick and they have been that way for a long time. Their games are like giant Choose Your Own Adventure books, only with a million choices and impressive graphics.
If you want a new game more focused on play control, why not try a game like Mirror's Edge, Street Fighter IV, Left 4 Dead 2, Trials 2 (aka Trials HD), Trine, or Team Fortress 2?

I can see where you're coming from. I enjoy the slower-paced and story-driven RPGs- but I need to balance it up with intense action titles. Maybe you should try a First Person Shooter, it doesn't have to be a combat sim like Modern Warfare, the setting in those games never appeals to me - maybe something like Half-Life 2 or the BioShocks. I'm having a blast with BioShock 2 at the moment, some of the most intense game-play I've ever experienced. If Japanese games are more your thing, Sin & Punishment 2 should be out soon, I've played through the import and can honestly say it's the best old school actioner I've played in years. The good games are still out there, you just have to wade through a lot of shite to find them.thetooth wrote:

Truth of the matter is though, that most games I do like from this generation of consoles I like more than any of my other games.

Re: Why don't new games turn me on?
This thread is a little confusing, you said you don't like new games because of a lack of innovation and new ideas. Yet the last game you said you enjoyed was Twilight Princess, which has to be the reused game idea in the history of games. Every Zelda game follows the same path more or less, the find dungeon, beat dungeon, get new item to access new part of world. This game has been recycling this mechanic since 1985 and does nothing new that I haven't seen before.
Lack of exposure due to you not owning any new consoles, really cripples your ability to see all the great new games out there. Games like Mass Effect don't really turn me on as well, but that doesn't mean the whole gaming landscape is barren of new ideas and innovation. For example, Heavy Rain, Little Big Planet, Madworld, Persona 3 & 4, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead 2, Boom Blox, Trauma Center, Loco Roco, Muramasa and Valkyria Chronicles all bring something new and different to the table. I'm sure theres others but thats just off the top of my head.
Then theres the downloadable games that are bursting with freshness and creativity. Braid, The Dishwasher Dead Samurai, Flower, Flow, Linger In Shadows, Lost Winds and countless others are all doing things never done in gaming before. You really can't experience any of these games unless you have newer consoles which you said you didn't have. To state that there is no more innovation in games these days because you didn't like Mass Market Effect 2 is a unfair statement, theres tons if you look.

@TC
I am right there with you. The only new games (with precious few exception) that amuse me are usually sequels of games from the 90's or made by the top game crafters from the 90's.
If it's not Mario, Megaman, Metroid, (sometimes) Sonic, Zelda, Castlevania, or some rare gem like Muramasa...I just can't bring myself to care for more than a few minutes in a row.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
