IT WAS ME ALL ALONG
Have you seen that HarperCollins put out a 30th Anniversary reprint of all 3 books and CHANGED ALL THE ARTWORK? That's like putting out a new edition of Hitchcock's Psycho, yet when you pop in the disk it plays the Gus Van Sant version.

What? But the artwork was the reason why we read those books.

EXACTLY. The stories are merely well-formed versions of urban legends and folklore. The artwork is the ONLY reason those got popular. It's funny to read Amazon reviews on the new set, so many pissed off people. Although if you buy something and don't notice one of the names on the cover is different, that's on you.

My wife and I were unpacking yesterday, and I found our hardcover compilation of all three "scary stories" books. The wonderful illustration TSTR linked above is on the cover, and when I opened the book, I turned gto:
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! I am a pretty grizzled horror fan, but those books still creep me out.

I think my favorite image from those books is this one:

Those books are phenomenal. Alvin Schwartz did a great job with the folklore retelling. The stories are well-written and succinct. And he did a large portion of his research at UMaine. Noice.
But yeah, the illustrations are devastatingly excellent. I love how Gammell also managed to make the non-supernatural "urban legend" type images look creepy as hell by messing with proportions, angles, and body structure. For example:
Brilliant books. I treasure my collection. Kind of hilarious that they were marketed to children with those images. The 80s were a different time, man.
