They aren’t necessarily my “40 favorite songs of all time” or even my “40 favorite songs from each year” or “40 best songs by these artists”. For example, my favorite song from 1997 is/was probably “No Surprises” by Radiohead...but since I also have them in the slot for favorite song from 2000 (“Idioteque”), I went with another favorite from 1997 on the list instead (the Dylan tune). In another example, I don’t think “Wishlist” (1998) is my favorite Pearl Jam song nor is it their best, but if I went with something like “Yellow Ledbetter” (1992) or “Rearviewmirror” (1993) I’d have had to bump off other songs I liked better than those two from each of those specific years.

It’s all very arbitrary, and some years I could have easily put a dozen songs in the slot, but I wanted to have 40 different artists represented, so that was the easiest way to do it.

I’ll be there in nine months... :(

On topic...my brother and I saw Tool in Raleigh on Sunday, and they put on a fantastic show. It was very different from the show I saw in 1998. Less metal and more bass-heavy, semi-psychedelic prog-rock. Accordingly, I am back listening to late-period Tool like Lateralus and 10,000 Days, and I really should pick up their new album.

List making continues...

Two related lists this time:

1) "40 Years - 40 Albums": one favorite album from each year, chronologically - https://www.discogs.com/lists/40-Years-40-Albums/541616

2) "40 Favorite Albums": My all-time Top 40 albums, in no particular order - https://www.discogs.com/lists/40-Favorite-Albums/541588

I took this list-making exercise as a chance to set up a Discogs account. I still need to add a ton of CDs, but if you are curious about what's in my vinyl collection, here's the link: https://www.discogs.com/user/dsheinem/c ... er=1927332

Discogs, huh? I use Rate Your Music.

Discogs looks tempting though, mainly because of that marketplace section.

Nice vinyl playa.

Post-punk can be great. I also do like the newer ones as well. Lots of essentials in your playlists there.

For that + new wave I would recommend P-Model's Perspective if you don't mind something on the more experimental side with really stylized singing (he sings off key all the time but I know this is intentional because his vocals in his other works are fantastic).

I LOVE the following: Have a Nice Life, 80s Swans, This Heat, Asylum Party, Bauhaus, Bodychoke, Gang of Four, Joy Division, P-Model, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Sisters of Mercy, The Birthday Party, Nick Cave, The Fall, Iceage, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Minimal Man, and Protomartyr.

A lot of it is goth but it is kind of post-punk.

As someone who enjoys prog, I've heard I need to get into UK and Uriah Heep. Any thoughts?

I've been listening to a lot of The Naked & Famous lately when I'm out and about. At home, the Brioni Faith YouTube channel has been live streaming a lot of her Trance/Industrial dance stuff, so I leave that on in the background now and again.
