Oh dude, I didn't realize it had been ported! Though I'm betting that completely removed the ability to port over Bard's Tale characters.

I'm sure you can't, unfortunately.

Speaking of which, The Bard's Tale II was also on Famicom (but not NES). A couple of other WRPGs too.

Yeah, I know a few made it over here too. I recall playing a Wizardry on the NES and being awful at it, but at least I tried!

Anyway, I'm playing Dragon Wars from GOG, which is also unfortunately not compatible with the versions of the Bards Tale games that are hidden in the 2004 Bard's Tale. A shame they can't get the original stand-alone, but I'll take what I can.

I finally got a front-lit wonderswan so I'm replaying Final Fantasy 1, navigating menus from memory based on familiarity with the GBA port.

If I beat this it will be the first time I've beaten an entirely Japanese language RPG (although the Lich is currently killing both my party and spirit!).

I have the Wonderswan port of FFIV coming and it should arrive just as I'm finishing this one off.

Hey guys, I started up Anvil of Dawn last night, and I'm really enjoying it. The interface is a breeze, combat feels good, and there is an in-game mapping system that is easy to use and allows for notes. It's one of the last of the grid-base movement games of its era, but it certainly closes things out with a bang.

Excellent post. I really enjoy those ports. Wish part three had made it to the WSC too though.

Thought I would post here as I do enjoy RPGs and I have been playing Final Fantasy II NES off and on. I beat FF I on NES a few years back and I am trying to get through them 1 by 1, but at this rate it will take a while. Realistically I want to beat the first three NES titles. Right now, I am in the forest running around with two shields on trying to raise my agility. It is a cool system to think about, and less to actually play on. I like leveling up the party, but it is such an odd system.

I enjoyed my playthrough of FF1 on Wonderswan. Portable and retains the old magic system, which is crucial for adequately maintaining the spirit of the original game (unless you play as only fighters/black belts).
I've played the original so many times, I don't need to read anything really (just memorize placing).

FFII on famicom, I'm not sure if I'll ever get through. That game benifitted most from the remake upgrades to me and I really need to continue my play on the PSP port (beat it on PS1 over a decade ago).

Been playing Lufia on SNES as of late (very casually). I think I'll actually beat it in the near future. It's weird though, I am much less forgiving of the game's shortcomings than I am of the early Final Fantasy games (like walk speed, encounter rate, having to power level, no item/magic descriptions, miss/targetting dead enemies, unfair/sadistic enemy groups, etc...)
I think it's because Final Fantasy gave you freedom to make your party and you are stuck with the designated party in Lufia, along with all the archaic annoyances. Also 8-bit vs 16-bit and SNES Final Fantasy games blow it completely away.
Still like it though (probably because I'm a sprite junkie).
...just another lost soul...

I have decided to try and beat I, II and IV on Wonderswan. My reward will be to buy myself one of the Final Fantasy themed WSwan colors when I've done it!.

I agree on FF I as I beat it on PSP and NES. The NES version is cool to me, as it has some odd quirks but is really neat to experience. I know there were a LOT of RPGs before the NES FFI, but they (1987 Square) did a lot of things right and I feel like a lot of aspects still hold up. Also, I agree that the Charges systems is better than implementing MP like the remakes did. It made the whole strategy of a dungeon crawl much more different, and I also liked how you had to crawl your way back out once you beat the boss.

For FF II I know it will be difficult, but I am hoping to get my stats through the roof, and then take on the game, which I realize is "cheating" but I actually like aspects of games like this. When you can "beat" the computer at its own game/system, sorta. It is why I still love Morrowind, since there is not cap for fortifying and you can easily bring your intelligence through the roof, and then make ridiculous spells.
