Good retro JRPG series to marathon?

by BoneSnapDeez Mon Oct 10, 2016 9:32 pm

Yeah, using "marathon" as a verb here.

Was pondering random crap today and was thinking it might be cool to play (and/or replay) through an entire JRPG series. All at once, all entries back-to-back. Looking for RETRO series that are 3-6-ish installments long, and don't feature any computer exclusives or computer-to-console ports.

The "Heaven and Earth" series seems like the obvious choice though I have played most of those pretty recently. I could revisit the Mother trilogy and/or the Chrono Trigger "trilogy" as well. Lunar could be a decent choice, with five unique entries. There's always Dragon Buster as well, haha.

Any other thoughts? I feel like I could be missing something obvious.

Dragon Warriors/Quest - how does this series stand up to time, the character and monster designs are almost the same, and it spinoff so many games!!!

Ys series even though it may not have the "retro" requirement. I say that because you can play 4 entries on the PSP and the last entry on the Vita.

That doesn't work...

How about Final Fantasy up to FF6? 5 of the entries are playable on the GBA.

Hope that helps.

You think so? I don't know if he'll like the 'bump' combat, or the fact that they're so short.

The PSP games have that sweet soundtrack and the game length for the series is "marathon" friendly without it being a chore to go through.

For a more serious answer, Phantasy Star.
