What about Hybrid Heaven on the Nintendo 64? And would you consider the game Magic Sword?

First off, play Dragon Valor on PS1 Bone. I bet you'd love it.

Like Ack said Hybrid Heaven.

Rent A Hero on Genesis.

Revengers of Vengeance on SEGA CD has an RPG mode that fits the bill.

Crimson Tears on PS2 is a unique beat 'em up / roguelike hybrid.

Really my favorite beat 'em up / action-RPG series is Yakuza all day every day. But I don't see Bone giving the Yakuza series a try until 2026 at the earliest.

I'll see if I can think of some more older 2D ones.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Dragon Valor got ripped to shreds when it was released because folks were expecting a Zelda-killer, and it's actually an action-RPG brawler instead. When treated as what it is, and not what it's not, it's a good time.

Something about the combat in Yakuza 3 was a little off to me haha. But it was still a blast. I hear the combat is better in 4 and probably the rest since then.

Hybrid Heaven is in no way a beat 'em up. It's a turn based RPG that uses martial arts moves instead of swords. If anything it's closest to Parasite Eve, where you can freely move at any time but can only trigger attacks when your ATB is full.

I plan on it. Gotta get through its two predecessors first.

NINJA BOY II and the whole "Super Chinese" game series are all basically Beat 'em up / action-RPG hybrids.

What about games like the God of War series, Onimusha, or Devil May Cry? Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks was another one kind of like that. Pretty light on the RPG side, but story-heavy beat 'em up action none the less.
