Heck Pokemon and Golden sun seem pretty accessible to the newbie. Golden sun I have to personally recommend because it doesn't really hold your hand on how to play but it's also not hard either. Plus the quirky animations make it worth it....other than that I have to second any Mario RPG specifically the gba Superstar Saga. That one is perfect for a beginner and hits all the right notes at least for me...

Yes.

And it's why both myself and Samson previously recommended:

This game was tailor made to be babby's first JRPG.

And it's actually a good game to boot.

I still need to play that myself. It actually really does look appealing to me, cool music too.

The first RPGs I played were Final Fantasy 2 and 3 (US). They were good, especially for the time, and they're still the only Final Fantasies I think are worthy of the pedigree.

Pokemon is where I got obsessed though, but I was pretty young. Earthbound is an earlier game from the same guys, and pretty similar to Pokemon in more ways I wanted to admit at first, it wouldn't be a bad idea if you only had SNES and Genesis to choose from. I can't think of any real beginner Genesis RPGs, all I played were these:

Just bring your graph paper!

I here Phantasy Star is pretty smooth though.

Speaking of which, Popo, when should we expect your epic Daggerfall playthrough to begin?

Almost as casual as having never played King's Field at all.

FFMQ is pretty good, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it right off. Great, great music in that game, though. Of course, Chrono Trigger also has great music, and the added side benefit of being one of the absolute best RPGs on the system at minimum, and the best RPG of all time at best (in my humble opinion).

It really is relatively simple, too. It's just complex enough to give some depth, a bit of strategy to encounters, but not so complex that it overwhelms you with options. You play, keep your equipment up to date, use those combo techs to your heart's desire, and enjoy that story. :)

Another suggestion, of course, if I may be so bold: Dragon Quest. Not the original, of course, but if you've got access to a DS, the remakes of IV, V, and VI are excellent on there. If you're willing to emulate, the remake of Dragon Quest III on SNES is also excellent. Since you've got a PS2, Dragon Quest VIII is also a really good option.

Actually, that's a really good idea. The GBC remake of DQ1&2 at least would be a great pick for someone's first JRPG.

Ok well thank you for all the replies. I'm going to try out chrono trigger. Wheather I get it on vc or wait for my everdrive. Once I get my everdrive I'll look at the final fantasy games afterwards but I'll try chrono trigger.
