FF VII was my first. And it was a great first love. Some of the more hard core thumb their nose at the game but you can't go wrong with it for a first imo. Fairly easy to get into, easy equipment/magic system etc.
I would recommend using a guide to get the most out of the game though. Don't think its possible for most people to get all the best equipment/magic in the game without one.

Many JRPGs are designed like that, unfortunately. Trying to drive additional income via selling associated strategy guides.
