Played up to the Sky Garden just for fun, I love the design of that level

But I gotta say as the years have passed and I'm getting into other SNES adventure style games, Illusion of Gaia just keeps slipping down my list. I'd rank SNES adventure games (or Action RPGs) like...

Link to the Past
Secret of Mana
Terranigma
Soul Blazer
Shadowrun
Alcahest
Illusion of Gaia
Secret of Evermore
Brainlord
Ys 3
Lagoon
Staring at a test pattern
Brandish

(Probably forgot at least a few)

As recently as a few years ago, I'd have put IoG #3 on that list, but Shadowrun and especially Soul Blazer are just way better.

I agree that the SNES Brandish is pretty awful. It's amazing how much of a difference the PSP remake made. I consider the SNES version to be a nice idea but terribly executed, whereas the PSP remake is one of the best action-RPGs I've ever played.

As far as forgetting a few, you forgot to mention Demon's Crest and Front Mission: Gun Hazard. Both of those are astonishingly awesome SNES action-RPGs.

I like Lagoon, Ys III, and Secret of Evermore more than Illusion of Gaia.

Best action-RPGs on the SNES are Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, and Terranigma. A Link to the Past is up there as well (on of the best games ever, period) though it's "RPG" status is debatable.

Drunk, you should play Xak and Neugier on Super Famicom.

P.S. Brandish owns. So does the sequel.

The SFC sequel (Planet Buster) fixes a lot of things, but I don't see anyone who's spent significant time with the SNES version of Brandish saying it "owns". It owns the ability to give the player a bad time, that much is true. :P

I really wish that they'd remake the entire series. Parts 3 and 4 are pretty much impossible to find these days.

Two weeks left. Not too late to start if you haven't yet.

Hey, I hopped into this for ten minutes while waiting for Payday 2 to update. I haven't played the game in about a month, but I was in the Seaside Palace at the time. I've now finished walking through that and have gotten to Mu, which puts me a little before the famed Vampire fight and about halfway through the game I believe. As my progress in Payday 2 is starting to wind down, maybe I'll come back to working on this.

Not really, no. I went in expecting to like it a lot more than I did. Admittedly this is not the only game that has suffered from my suddenly huge interest in Payday 2, but even so I haven't really felt too pressed to return beyond feeling the urge to just get it done.
