Take Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis over this. 10000x better. :P

My favorite game on the GBA, but I may be a little biased...

Why? It's not like Canopus makes a cameo in it... does he?

No he doesn't... I just love everything from the Ogre Battle series

Yggdra Union
Yuu Yuu Hakusho Tactics (the FF tactics-like game using the Yuu Yuu Hakusho license. There is another Yuu Yuu Hakusho game that sucks)
Onimusha Tactics (same as above, but this time it's based on Onimusha)

I'm totally in love with Advance Wars 2. Rebelstar Tactical Command, loving it as well. Yggdra Union and Fire Emblem are also obvious choices, I suppose, but I haven't yet got them.

Not completely convinced by the FFT and and Tactics Ogre, as the they're said to be inferior or easier to the SFC and PS originals.

They arent ports... Tactics Ogre on GBA is a prequel

FFTA is inferior in most ways, but its combat system and array of classes and races are nice.

The other games dont have console counterparts to compare to really. Or if they do, they were sequels to the handheld versions.

I don't blame you on the TO confusion there. For some reason I thought the GBA game was a port for years myself... but yeah, it's a completely different game from the SNES/PSX/PSP one.

So I'm 20 hours into FFTA and on my third attempt trying to play through it and once again I am very bored. I've attained all of the character classes I was interested in and with the story being so dull nothing else is compelling me to go forward in this game. This is the first tactical RPG I've played and should I try another one or just stick with FFTA to the end of the game?

Yeah, I meant different game in the series, bad choice of word, I guess. OP apparently has PSP, so that has both as improved ports/remakes or whatever... well, it's personal thing for me, that I really don't have patience for simplified pre-/sequels just so you see where I'm coming from. May not apply to OP, the GBA games may be nice to start with. I wouldn't know for sure, so shouldn't say much.

I'll still just recommend Advance Wars games, I have the second and it's only game I've played lately, really, and I have DS Lite rather than GBA, so I have many games to choose from. It's very accessible and fun TBS game, and story is comfortably generic and depthless. Rebelstar Tactical Command goes for cheap. I got sealed one for almost free, probably quite overlooked game.
