[EDIT]
The Tactical RPG Top 10 is now posted. Check it out here: http://timewarpgamer.com/top10s/tactical_rpgs.html
Thanks for all the help.
[/EDIT]

Finding the best place for this thread was a little tricky. Obviously, there is more to strategy games than Tactical RPGs, but considering the popularity of that genre and that it does kind of dominate my list, I figured I'd give this forum section a shot. Anyway, I'm working on expanding the top 10 lists at my site, so I'm turning to feedback from the experts again. Here's my tentative list:

#1 Bahamut Lagoon (J) -- Super Famicom
#2 Langrisser II (J) -- Mega Drive/Super Famicom
#3 Just Breed (J) -- Famicom
#4 Shining Force II -- Genesis
#5 Ogre Battle -- SNES
#6 Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu (J) -- Super Famicom
#7 Jungle Strike -- Genesis/SNES
#8 Military Madness -- TG-16
#9 Front Mission (J) -- Super Famicom
#10 Dune: The Battle for Arrakis -- Genesis
Honorable Mention: Gain Ground -- Genesis/SMS
Honorable Mention: Treasure Hunter G (J) -- Super Famicom

I'm sure that Jungle Strike and Gain Ground will get the most WTFs, but I like to try to cover the diversity of the genre, and let's face it, slamming the fire button will get you nowhere in either of these games; it's all about choosing the right weapon for the job and carefully planning your attack.

Anyway, please let me know what you think when you have the chance. Is some steaming pile of crap clogging up the list? Or maybe I've totally forgotten an awesome title...

That's the first thing I was thinking of.

I was just like "where is Herzog Zwei?!"

What about games like ActRaiser? Or Cannon Fodder? What about Genghis Khan II or the Nobunaga's Ambition series? What about Worms or the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games? Heck, and these are just Super Famicom or SNES games. You have a lot of strategy RPGs, but surely there's more straight strategy you could throw on the list.

I don't really like strategy games, but I will play Herzog Zwei against a live person as long as they're not a military mastermind. So I'm lining up right behind Uber and Ryan.

No Herzog Zwei? You can't have Military Madness on there without it.

I'm no regular poster to this site but I read recent threads and any time that this kind of Strategy/RPG talk comes up I never here anyone mention Power Monger for Genesis.

I've never bothered to master the game but I consider it a great accomplishment to get through the first couple maps alone. I would love to know if someone has gone all the way through that giant map and beat it instead of using the final password.

The game has tons of flaws but it is pretty rewarding to get your guys to do what you really meant them to do and win battles against other towns/cities.

You guys play it?

Man, this would be a great guide, I've looked up a few of these titles, and some are just what I've been looking for. Ack, I may be pm-ing you later for more info on the ones you mentioned.

Nobunagas Ambition?

There was a Civilization port for the SNES too. Dunno how faithful it was, but the DOS version is one of the best of all time.

I liked Future Cop L.A.P.D., which is in the same vein as Jungle/Desert/Soviet/Nuclear Strike. Throw in Gemfire for the NES, and General Chaos for the Genny, and you have everything covered in my book.
