Asterix was/is pretty popular, at least in Europe. I agree that at least the Mickey Mouse games are a big deal on SMS (and GG) and they are pretty much different games compared to on MD, similar deal to some NES games like Bionic Commando, but not every 8-bit conversion of a main 16-bit game is what I'd call defining. Not Ecco or Jungle Book for example. Some of them would be good for a HG article though such as Road Rash or Aladdin, which are both rather impressive for the SMS.

Top 100 poll results from one of the more popular SMS focused sites:

Edit:

3D Games - I owned the glasses and a handful of titles, but it was more of a niche thing. Best games are probably Outrun 3D and Space Harrier 3D.

Arcade Ports - Really depends on the game. Would definitely include these: Shinobi, Bubble Bobble, R-Type. Wonder Boy, Fantasy Zone, and Rastan.
Maybe Outrun, Space Harrier, Double Dragon, Captain Silver, After Burner and Golden Axe although they certainly don't hold up as well. Enduro Racer is its own thing on SMS and fairly well liked (there are also some notable regional differences), a bit of a borderline case.

Zillion was basically us SMS owners' Metroid or Impossible Mission, along with Wonder Boy 3.

Solomon's Key is a pretty good port with some nice FM music, but sadly JP only.

I think Yuzo Koshiro did the SMS Sonic soundtrack, so that's noteworthy.

Do we have a Rare and Valuable for Master System? I can offer a little bit for that if you do one since I'm definitely the only person here with a copy of Battletoads in Battlemaniacs for the system.

We do, but it's very eligible for revisions and expansions

Battlemaniacs is the only rare Master System game that I have any real experience with or knowledge of, but if you do a revised guide, I'd be glad to add a little bit about it when you send it to me for edits.

I mean, might as well just stick all the Brazilian exclusives on the list.

Cyber Shinobi is pretty crap, and generally regarded as such too. Maybe Ninja Gaiden instead? Different to the first NES game, plays more like NG3. Europe only.

Power Strike 2 is also EU only it seems. Best vertical shooter.

Ninja Gaiden didn't really define the SMS, it's not even that well known now.

I agree Cyber Shinobi sucks, and Alex Kidd in Shinobi World is also kinda unknown. If I were to include it, I'd include it with Alex Kidd rather than with Shinobi.

I'd only include the original Shinobi game for SMS as a defining title.

It's a unique game, not a port. It's also a pretty good one and a lot more relaxed than the NES games.

I'm a bigger fan of the NES Ninja Gaiden but the Master System game is well worth playing. I agree it didn't define the system but it is one of its best games.
