Reducing Sega Dreamcast Fan Noise

This is probably known for most of you on here. But I am only posting this so it shows up on search engines. Whenever I tried Googling this, I just got a bunch of results about buying a different/modded Dreamcast fan that is silent.

This would have been nice if I played my games through GDEMU. But I still play via CDs so my laser is loud. However, my fan was even louder. And it was constant. At least my laser would just make the scratchy DJ sound 2-3 times a minute. My fan was so loud to the point where I had to turn up the volume on games.

Anyway, I just needed my fan to be quieter to the point where it wasn't louder than my laser. And this was the fix.

Basically, just take out you DC fan. On one of the sides in the center, there's a black sticker. You have to take that off. And add some grease inside that bearing. It is extremely small, so you only need like a dot of grease. Pop the fan back in, and your fan should be quieter. Mine sure was.

You can watch this video for a visual of relubing your fan:

Actually I had no idea about this. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, though. I have a Dreamcast that's very noisy when I turn it on. At the time I thought it was the disc motor making so much noise, but now that I think about it, it may have been the van. In any case I'll have to drag it out and take another look at it with this tutorial in mind.

The drive is more annoying than the fan honestly.

The fan is superfluous. You can probably remove it to get rid of the noise.

I don't think you need to reduce Noise much. Just wait a while and he moves on to something else, like Game Boy or PC.

He'll always come back around to one of those, though.

In my case it wasn't. My fan was super loud. Wish I did an audio before and after.

I need my VMU to beep, drive to sound like a car belt, fan to sound like a white noise maker... then queue the DC BIOS screen.

Not the full DC experience without it
