Good classic Sonic fan games?

After Metroid AM2R, I'm a bit curious about the Sonic scene. Especially with Sonic Mania apparently employing some long time Sonic fan game coders/devs?

I played one called Mega Mix a few years ago and it was pretty cool from what I remember. Used a lot of assets from Sonic CD and felt like an authentic Sonic game for the most part.

That's basically what I'm looking for, something that feels authentic and like a real Genesis Sonic or Sonic CD sequel. Easier said than done perhaps, haha. But yeah I'm curious if there's some good ones out there.
