Saturn Convinced?

by strangenova Tue Feb 16, 2016 5:10 pm

So I've been really thinking about getting a saturn. I've seen some of the games and it looks like an awesome system, but I really have no experience with it at all.

So convince me to get it or not to? I need to know the pros and cons from people that know it well

Pros: IT'S AN OMFG SATURN!!! AWESOMENESS!
Cons: You need to take out a mortgage just buy more than three games.

Pros: Many interesting and exclusive games. Really diverse import library. A Saturn console itself isn't very expensive to obtain. Great system for shmup and fighting genre fans. Apparently it's not too difficult to physically mod the system to play imports or burned discs.

Cons: Many of the Saturn's best games have become prohibitively expensive for the average retro collector. And a lot of Saturn's greatest games are only available in Japanese.

Reality: Most people I know who play Saturn, do so via piracy. Either with burned discs in a modded Saturn, or via ISOs played through SSF.

Being serious, there's a lot of awesome games that haven't been ported elsewhere. There's the Panzer Dragoon games, Burning Rangers, Dragon Force, Shining Force III, Bulk Slash*, Assault Suit Leynos 2*, Saturn Bomberman, Fighters Megamix and many more.

The above games, with exception of emulation and piracy, can only be played on a Saturn. There's so many unique and fun games :)

*These games are Japanese. It's easy to play imports on a Saturn, with an Action Replay cart.

IMO, Panzer Dragoon Saga is one of the very best RPGs, and it has not been ported to other systems. It is incredibly expensive, however, and most of the other great Sega Saturn games have ports (making the Saturn a "for collectors only" system, IMO).

The Saturn is a great underrated system that was buried by the PlayStation in 1995. Today a lot of people cherish the system. I have one now but like everyone says unless your single and have no responsibilities you can buy the games.
If not then either get a Japan system or a action reply card and import and even now that's catching on. I can't burn disc but if I could or you know someone then go that route. And if you know anyone let me know lol

It sounds really good. But I don't really have that much money to throw at games. I prefer to drop fifty and get a half a dozen games rather than a hundred to get one. But I might get one and just really slowly get games for it.

So is the 3d controller a necessary add on or can all games be played without it?

Stay away! Stay away... Forever!!!

No the 3D Controller isn't really necessary, tho it does make certain games a bit more enjoyable to play. For me that game would be Sega Touring Car Championship.
