Sega CD "Hidden Gems"

Post by mbl1031 »

We all know of the most popular games on Sega CD, such as Sonic CD, but what are some really great games that not everyone knows or cares to try?

maybe not totally hidden, as it was a pack-in at launch, but I absolutely loved Sol-Feace (aka Sol-Deace on Genesis). The anime intro seemed amazing to me at the time. And it was actually one of the only shmups I played when I was younger.

I would call 95% of the library hidden, since other than Snatcher and Sonic CD most people don't know anything about Mega CD games, and who can blame them? The things are expensive, many of them later ported to the Playstation, and you must own a Mega Drive to buy a Mega CD, and that console has a library large enough to keep you interested for years.

And this is exactly why I use emulators.

Try Keio Flying Squadron, and Lords of Thunder. Both are very good shmups. Lords of Thunder might be a bit expensive. But if you do survive the frustration driven suicide attempts while playing this game, you will be quite pleased with having obtained it. Also has insane metal music. And Android Assault: The Revenge of Bari-Arm.

Try Revengers of Vengeance. It's not the greatest fighting game in the world, but it has a killer RPG section that is actually pretty groundbreaking (well, it would have been groundbreaking if it had been paired with a better fighting engine). Still, def worth checking out.

with the sega cd library being pretty damn small - i think only 147 titles - MOST the good games are well known. and a lot of the good games appear on other consoles with few being sega cd exclusive titles.

but a game that maybe some don't know about is dungeon explorer. i have only played maybe 10 minutes of it, but i definitely want to sink my teeth into it and get a better feel for it. from what i played it seems like a mix between gauntlet and a zelda-like adventure. i think this game also made its appearance on the turbo grafx.

and if you like snatcher you might also like space adventure. but, good luck finding a copy, as it is probably the hardest game to track down for the sega cd. it is also one of the more expensive, as i have seen it sold for 200.
if you took a shit, please put it back

One of the few SegaCD games that haven't been 'enhanced' on other platforms is Popful Mail.

Android Assault/Bari-Arm tends to get overlooked quite a bit. Not the best shmup ever but it's fun.

I should be sick of saying this by now but Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side on Sega CD is a really underrated 2D fighter, especially if you like unlockable characters and crazy fatalities.

Also in my opinion the definitive version of Earthworm Jim is on Sega CD.
