There is no denying Sonic is going downhill.

What do you think Sega has screwed up the most?
What do you hate most about the modern Sonic games?

Here's what I think:

And how I think Sega can fix it:

Mainly its the loss of speedy levels once they force you to play other characters.

Gameplay.
Gameplay.

I actually just played through Sonic Adventure 1 with Sonic yesturday. Truly, one of the worst games on the system.

I think they're really developing on impulse rather than thinking things through, good examples of this is Sonic Riders and Shadow the Hedgehog. Sonic Riders could've been pretty cool but apparently it wasn't. Shadow was just a huge departure and didn't turn out well at all. I think they've lost sight of whats really important, the simplicity of it all. You don't really see Mario trying to be all mature or whatever, and he does have his large share of gimicky games, good and bad, but the difference is, they aren't all bad.

I think they need to stop trying so hard to innovate go back to the basics and re-build from there. The last good Sonic game I played was Sonic Rush. Although I have heard the new Sonic game for 360 and PS3 was pretty good.

I really loved Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. Haven't played the new ones yet, except the first level of heroes - which was really boring.

The graphics, "adventure" aspect, and the chaos haven't aged well dude. Those were the reasons the game seemed pretty good at launch. Play the game now. None of that stuff helps when every 10 seconds the camera tries to kill you, and every 15 seconds Sonic gets caught on some invisible object.

The only thing that has been consistantly high quality throughout the franchize, is the music.

Sonic is pretty much Sega's desperate way to make money, so they just release all those crappy games just to make a quick buck.

I've wanted to put together an article on why the 3D Sonic games are actually not bad for for a while, but it's a lost cause and a lengthy argument.

I think it's mainly popular belief that leads people into believing the 3D Sonics are no good. People start complaining about the games long before they're even released, and Sonic is such a popular character that anyone will listen to the scorn and dismiss the title. If people weren't as hypercritical as they are about random secondary facets and nuances, and looked to the core level design and play structure, they'd find much better games. Everything but the 15-year nostalgia in the "good" 2D Sonics is also in the 3D ones.
