Sonic & Knuckles to play Sega Master System games?

I know he Megadrive (Genny) had the hardware to play SMS games and that the official converter only acted as a passthrough, so in theory this could work if the slot on top of Sonic & Knuckles was the right shape to take a SMS cart.

Can someone who has one let me know if this works?

No, it's the size of a Genesis cartridge port, not a Master System cartridge port.

Plus if you plug a random cart other than Sonic 2 or 3 into S&K then it boots up the Blue Sphere mini-game instead of the other game.

This is rather off topic, but this all reminds me of the time I stuck S&K into my Genesis, then stuck a power base adapter into S&K, then put Alex Kidd into the adapter and turned on the system. It just gave me a black screen with nothing on it.

You should of tried putting Sonic for SMS instead of Alex Kidd, then maybe you could have played as Knuckles in SMS Sonic

I tried that by rigging up my Game Gear version of Sonic 1 to the master converter. I used paperclips and an old SG-1000 cartridge (Flicky, if you really want to know) to connect the leads. Worked like a charm!
