Re: A Critical Analysis of Wario Land 4
but is written like an FAQ or wiki page - pretty much the opposite of analysis "How to Read this Book" - "On The book's structure". TLDR seems to be the problem here. If the Chrono Trigger book you're referring to is the one being done by Game Design Forum, I must say that their...

Re: A Critical Analysis of Wario Land 4
I don't know what to say. You either haven't read the articles close enough or you're just intentionally being antagonistic. The psychology excerpt explains how the various game elements persuade the player to behave in particular ways. I talk about education, level variation, game ideas, camera des...

Re: A Critical Analysis of Wario Land 4
Valkyrie-Favor, as you've rightfully pointed out, the preview on the Amazon page is hardly an ideal representation of the book. As I explain in the "How to Read This Book" section, the Need to Know chapter is all about framing the game in preparation for the analysis (you know, the other 5...

Re: A Critical Analysis of Wario Land 4
^Sure. Wario Land 4 is an extremely focused platformer. The designers removed some of the excesses from prior games and just used what they had in more clever and interesting ways. For example: -Each level is designed around a certain game idea and each room explores that idea in continually more el...

Re: A Critical Analysis of Wario Land 4
Wow, thanks for posting about the book, Gooseberrysoda. As David mentioned, I used to frequent these boards and contribute a bit to the site back around 2007-2008. I'm pretty busy with my writing these days, but I still follow the site and listen to the podcasts, and it's as awesome as it's always b...

Re: Why don't people talk about this game more?
@remyc I do think that the time mechanic reinvents the way Majora's Mask is approached by the player in a way that seperates it significantly. It's Havest Moon-like in that sense. The mechanic is central to the entire game, lending itself to the narrative of Clock Town's populants and the other part...

Re: Why don't people talk about this game more?
@remmyc The time affected the way you play the entire game, unless you'd gain tangible results (complete a dungeon, side quest or other) in the game world, the song of time would wipe any semi-completed progress. This mechanic (along with the others previously mentioned, among other things) makes Te...

Re: Why don't people talk about this game more?
No one there is saying much either, just talking about how it reminds them of the music from, "ocarina of time", and that they need walk-throughs to help them. Yeah, that's kinda how those people roll. I wish there would be more in depth discussion of Zelda: Majora's Mask. When you break ...

Re: Why don't people talk about this game more?
I'll second Yakuza 2, I jumped on the bandwagon after hearing so many people laud it for it's rare gem-ness. I'm stuck relatively early on, the game wants to teach me Majong and it makes me depressed that none of my Asian friends taught me previously. Otherwise, I wish there would be more indepth di...

Re: Elder Scrools II: daggerfall is free
I tried the original when they first made it available for free. Would like to test this out too, but since it's free fodder which'll run on my laptop, I guess I'll save it until I go overseas next. I wish more developers would offer freebie old games. It's surprising though why they didn't just off...
