You can keep going if you lose a raid battle, as long as the raid is still ongoing. The pass is good for the entire hour so you won't need to use another one.

From my experience, a good trainer can easily solo any 1 or 2 star raid. You just need to remember the type differences: Fire > Grass Water > Rock/Ground/Fire Ground > Electric & Poison Psychic > Poison That covers nearly all the 1 and 2 star battles. 3 stars are better with at least 2-3 people....
